Well, Some back ground leading up to my Glacier Question. First off, I prefer Rail to driving on long trips. Planes Ok but I don't see an airport in the area. Anyway. We took Amtrak to Fargo for the North Country Trail annual celebration. On the return trip I said to my wife, Ya know the Empire Builder goes to Glacier. With a station at West Glacier, going to the sun road to Lake McDonald Lodge. Red Bus and shuttles we would not need a car. Trying to do it without needing a car. Not planning back country camping, but day hiking and photography. Now THE question. Taking Amtrak, will West Glacier be our best destination or East Glacier? I believe the nearest Airport is a long distance away. Looking to see the most in the least amount of Vacation time. Ideas, Suggestions Please...

I believe the best hiking is on the East side o the park but north of Eat Glacier - Cut Bank area, Two Medicine area and especially the Many Glacier area. You can get off the train at East Glacier but I'm not sure of the red bus schedule to Many Glacier and points in between. Best check on that.

Also, are you camping in the park campgrounds or staying in hotel/motels?

I know nothing about the buses, but I do realize that all the hiking we did when there was on the east side. My favorite area might have been 2 Medicine Lake, and I don't know if you can get there by bus at all.

I loved the shuttle system. Who knows if it runs the same this year, from when we went. But it was SO handy. And yes, the train stations are RIGHT there to the park.
