I was at the gym this morning and noticed that my toes were banging up against the end of my shoe. I've noticed this a few times lately. "Hmmm...", I thought to myself. "I'm not even hiking downhill." So I went to EMS and asked them to measure my feet. I'm one or one and a half sizes bigger than I've been in decades! I'm not relishing the thought of spending a bunch of money on new shoes, but it could explain some things, like why I lost two toenails in Patagonia last year.

I think that's a pretty normal thing that happens with age. For us women, it also happens with pregnancy! (The hormones that loosen connections enough to allow a baby out affect the whole body, so the feet flatten and expand). I went up a half a shoe size at least after the boys were born. Oh, and they didn't expand evenly. One foot is almost a half size larger than the other now. Sucks.

Yeah, some of my shoes fit fine. Right now I know that two pairs of Salomon are too small. Others, like a pair from Merrell, seem to fit fine. It'd be interesting to try the Merrells that "fit" with the same pair 1 or 1.5 sizes larger.

Is your longitudinal arch collapsing? Uh, didn't know I had one. I'm guessing that's the long axis, heel to toe? Is it legal to have one? If so, is it legal for it to collapse (similar to bankruptcy)? This sounds like I'm headed to a meeting with the IRS or SEC, and that's never a good thing. Will I be deported?

It's OK as long as you have a birth certificate. Otherwise you're jaywalking.

According to my research on the Cobbler-Arch Bill, you will in fact face stiff penalties during your next visit to REI.

I liked EMS, but they crashed and burned in Colorado.
My right foot has Plantar Fasciitis bad, I had to go up a full size over the last few years.
