I'm new to this specific incarnation of Backpacker, but was a long time contributor to the backpacker forums tied to Backpacker Magazine. I even won a Backpacker hat one month for being chosen the "Story of the Month." That feature/recognition went away quite some time ago so I guess that kind of dates me. I consider myself a liberal in the classic mold of Teddy Roosevelt, John Kennedy, and Hubert Humphrey, and am politically a fiscal and social conservative. I was born in Indonesia, immigrated to the US as a child with my parents, and grew up predominantly in Southern California. I spent many years serving in the US Navy both on active duty and in the reserves. I raised my family in Southern California and over the decades as a youth and an adult I have backpacked all over California and other points west. But I now live in Texas where backpacking and outdoors activities in general are often significantly different. I'm still figuring that out.

I even won a Backpacker hat Indeed you did. Those were the days. Then Backpacker eventually was taken over by a new owner, and eventually that owner decided to "upgrade" the forum. That did not go well, and to make a long story short, this forum was started to side-step the broken one. And with other details not needed now, this is a now a free-standing forum, not owned by Backpacker, and we are doing well! So yes, you must have noticed a number of familiar names because once-lost members are finding their way back. Good to see KenV back on the roster.

I now live in Texas where backpacking and outdoors activities in general are often significantly different. I'm still figuring that out. I'm a lifelong Texan, and would be happy to offer any guidance I can. But there's no getting around it--Texas is just not a great place for backpacking. Very little public land.

Thank you for your service. Welcome back, also from Texas. I hail from New Braunfels, about halfway between San Antonio and Austin. This puts me within 30 minutes driving time to three nice rivers and a nice lake. So lots of water sports and RV/tailgate camping, but precious little hiking. I've done Enchanted Rock a few times, hiked Guadalupe Peak (highest point in Texas at 8750 ft) a few times, and done some other hiking, but finding good backpacking here is hard. The Davis Range in west Texas offers some Alpine like hiking trails, but they're much drier than I'm used to requiring me to pack a lot of water. The nearest backpacking of the style I'm used to is in the mountains of New Mexico, so a 10+ hour drive. Where to you go for your backpacking fix?
