It's interesting how much we've learned in the last 20 years about these things. One reason I got in the habit of using too much ibuprofen is that my doctor advised it, long ago! I was complaining of pain in my big toe joint, and his response was to take ibuprofen both before and after running. I've certainly shifted away from that, and I don't think my doctor now would advise any such thing.
Not faulting that original MD--that feeling that the stuff was a miracle drug with no significant side-effects was state-of-the-art then.

Exactly why my philosophy is NO MEDICAL OR UNNATURAL INTERVENTION unless it's pretty clear that the no-action risk is significantly greater than the unknown risks of following the experts' advice. "Experts" tend to be myopic specialists who are too often oblivious to the whole forest around their particular tree. They're wrong far too often for me to trust the next one to be right. I try to give my body the first right of refusal to fix whatever ails it.

The original birth control pills were WAAAAAY stronger than they needed to be. But we learned and now birth control pills are much better and safer than when they first were developed. As far as NASAIDs, we have been using aspirin for millenia and thus before the formation of the FDA. We used to give it to children UNTIL the 1980s when it was linked to deadly Reye's syndrome. Now children are given other things instead of aspirin. My whole point is that some people are stuck with the notion that there is no harmful side effects and thus take way too many NSAIDs. Use them when you need them and when you don't ... well you just don't. If I get too much sun, I am likely to pop two aspirin. It helps a lot. If I wake up stiff ... I mean sore, I pop a couple as well. Normally I wait rather than load up on them ahead of time. I love science! Rumi

Productive side discussion on NSAIDs, thankyou. All the summary up to date info one might want to know about NSAIDs as usual in the incredibly useful Wikipedia and at bottom enough reference links into more depth to put one to sleep each evening all month:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonsteroidal_anti-inflammatory_drug
Most people I have known over my life sound much like many of you in regards to taking medical drugs for a range of reasons. Some take medicines chronically while others little. Some must take drugs as therapy their doctors prescribe. I'm making an input here just to let others know in balance as a personal example that our bodies can cope adequately in many situations without taking any drugs at all. After all our ancestors managed without them.
I'm at the extreme end of those who take medicines least. Part of the reason is I am rarely sick with head colds/flu, rarely get headaches, rarely drink more than a few sips of alcohol, never smoked cigarets, don't drink caffeinated drinks, and have always been very active with outdoor recreation for decades.
Every few years when I do catch a head cold I don't take any medicines at all except an aspirin if a sinus pressure headache occurs. Otherwise the only time I take aspirin is every few years if I have a tooth ache or dental work. I do get DOMS muscle soreness like everyone else however such pain is rather trivial. Minor pains like that including the arthritis in my finger knuckles serves a purpose of body feedback in areas I need to minimize use of. Again, I do understand why the majority in this era tend to take pills any time they have even mild discomforts, however one does have a choice to let one's body be.
