Hi all-
I'm Mike, and I live in Duluth, MN with my wife and son. In my previous life here, I lived in Minneapolis.
I was a fairly frequent participant here up until about 7 years ago, when life got in the way of backpacking. Long stories, but a young child, some budgetary constraints regarding travel, and some family health issues all made us lose our prioritization of backpacking.
Rest assured, we still camped and did a couple of canoe camping trips every year.
Now, everyone is healthy, and our son is old enough to start doing some more significant hiking. We have taken him to the BWCA several times, and he is good in the woods, happy, and does his part in camp. He also hikes with us on the numerous trails here in Duluth. (SHT as well as the park trails in town). He can do rugged 5 milers quite comfortably now, as long as we give him a couple of breaks.
So we are planning a train trip to GNP this coming summer. Mostly basecamping, but we are going to look for a good 2 night BP trip, ideally a 5-8 mile hike, then a campsite on water with fishing for 2 nights with a side hike. I will post in another thread about ideas for that. We went back and forth betwen YNP and GNP for his first mountain trip (2nd, technically, as he went to Glacier when he was 10 months old). The idea of the train, the views, and the option to meet up with a forum and Facebook friend made Glacier win out.
Anyway. Cheers, everyone. Looking forward to getting back into this life, and back into this wonderful community!

Welcome! Duluth and GNP? Two great places, for sure. We rode the train to Glacier when our girls were young -- it was a great time. Gone are the days of luxurious train travel, but we find it fun, nonetheless. (We also had a stint on the pizza train out of the Duluth museum once.) It sounds like you have some grand adventures planned!

You'll be much happier with the new stable, working forum. The riff raff that inhabit it, however are a whole 'nuther kettle o' fish.

We love it up here.

Ah yes, Duluth and GNP. Two places I have frequented over the years. Two locales etched with fond affection on the emulsion of my soul. I live in Minnesota likewise, so Duluth is a routine thing. I must say, I love strolling through your town, especially when I'm hungry. So many good places to eat. I've adopted the Duluth Grill there as sort of my "restaurant crush", if you will. My but that is some tasty spoils found there. They have a coconut cream pie that I almost feel guilty for eating, not because of calories, but because it is such a work of art. Topped with home made caramel sauce and whipped cream, it is pie suited for kings. And I just can't find anything like it other than at the Duluth Grill. So that watering hole and I have bonded in recent years.
And then to head up the shore with fully stocked packs in the back of the truck, and look for someplace pretty to camp. Some place where the chickadees cavort in the birch and balsam, where upon to hang your hammock there, and listen to the fresh water surf toss onto a rocky beach. Oh that's living! My preferred lifestyle if I can get it. So I am glad to hear the healthy days are back again, and long also may your trails wander unto those chosen places far from town, where the wind whispers in the pines, and you know in your heart that you have arrived. Bless ya, sir. And your family too.
Enjoy Glacier! I cannot conceive a more lovely spectacle in the lower 48. It's top of the line.
