Honestly, I can't think of many good ones and I think I've seen most of them. A Walk in the Woods was sort of funny, sometimes but didn't come close to the book. Wild, IMO, was absolute drivel. Into the Wild was OK. By far the best hiking/walking film I've seen was The Way starring Martin Sheen (www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5VZKWcgw6c) about a pilgrimage to Camino de Santiago in Spain. I thought it quite good and well worth viewing for the whole family. That's about all I can tell you. Might be that hiking just doesn't lend itself to exciting movies.

I actually just enjoy the free stuff on YouTube.
There is a channel called 'The Southwest Backpacker', produced by a fellow in New Mexico that visits some areas that I also enjoy.
There's another one by a fellow in Alberta 'Martyupnorth' that I like a lot.

I agree with all these assessments. The Way was somewhat formulaic, but an outstanding movie overall. Though technically not a backpacking movie, Jeremiah Johnson is a great movie about the power and the seductiveness of the wilderness. Several Herzog movies also come to mind, including Grizzly Man and Aguirre Wrath of God. One little known and underappreciated movie is Tracks, about a young woman who goes on a solo trek across the Australian Outback. A pretty awe-inspiring story, with beautiful cinematography.

Jeremiah Johnson is a great movie I guess, being somewhat of a historian, I have trouble with this type of movie (Jeremiah Johnson, The Revenant, etc.). They are so far removed from the actual historical events, that's it's laughable. Guess you just have to take them at their entertainment value which is hard for me to do. I'm always thinking "Geeze, are you guys serious?"

Nice suggestions. I watched Grizzly Man and found it pretty interesting. Deliverance is indeed a classic, however due to some theme content, not suitable for everybody. Need to check on "Tracks" Another movie with survival theme that I liked is the way back. It is a good watch.
