i know this isn't backpacking, I am heading to Shenandoah late april with friends who don't want to backpack. all the campgrounds that take reservations are full. how quickly do the first come first serve camps fill up on a Friday? id much rather get a camp spot than find a cabin somewhere. Any other good camping options?

The sites fill up fast on Fridays and Saturdays. You need to be there early.

I think the issue isn't that it's sold out, it's that the campgrounds aren't officially open yet. I've camped at Loft Mountain in early May a few times (coming off the AT) and we were the only ones there. They were weekdays, but still...
It's probably worth calling Big Meadows: 540-999-3231. Please post the response here (if you receive one).
PS: Don't sell the PATC cabins short. They can be pretty great for non-backpackers, especially if it's raining.

which are the PATC cabins? I've only stayed in 4 of them: Doyle's River, Pocosin, Corbin and Range View and Range View is my favorite. Here's the availability chart. You can only rent them 60 days in advance. However you can rent them earlier if you pay in full for 3 days (I think). Just Google PATC cabins for more info.

With two exceptions, Shenandoah's campgrounds don't open until May 3, 2017. The two exceptions are Big Meadows, which opens March 24, and Lewis Mountain, which opens March 31. Big Meadows begins taking reservations on May 5. It is first-come before that. Lewis Mountain is first-come all year. You can find the full schedule here. If you are coming in early on a Friday and flexible about which campground you stay at, you shouldn't have too much trouble. They have the campground status posted at the entrance stations. If you are arriving on Saturday morning, that would be a lot harder.
