hey guys... I live in middle Tennessee and the house I've owned for the past four years is a hotbed of yellow jacket activity. I had no less than 4 active nests at once last summer and I've already found one this year.
last summer there was one directly in front of our living room window that proved especially pesky to mow around. one day I walked around out front to find the nest had been dug up with comb all around the entry. this week I found the same thing happened to the new nest.
I know bears do this, but we don't have bears in Nashville. who else would do such a thing, I wonder. I'd like to buy them a beer, or something.

Raccoon or skunk, most likely. If that is a bee's nest in the ground, why can't you just park the running mower over the top of the outlet and wait a while?

ashepabst, in a residential area, probably a groundhog would be my guess.

interesting! so I guess lots our neighborhood critters dig up yellow jacket nests. I know we definitely have skunks, raccoons, armadillos, groundhogs, moles and foxes. maybe a I need a trail cam.

Chickens don't dig them up but will eat every one they can catch flying in and out.

Eat nails for breakfast, Yeti for lunch, and and orange for dinner and tough it out.

When I was about 7 or 8 my little brother and I were stung when he disturbed a nest while up at our cottage. I was stung 48 times. He was stung 52. We know how many times because my aunt made a game out of counted them to help calm us from the pain as she dabbed them with something or other.
Today, a kid would likely be rushed to the ER but in our case we were simply put to bed for a nap. We slept through the afternoon and evening right through to the next morning due, I suppose, to the amount of venom in our systems.
I had a phobia for the next few years of wasps and bees. Last time I was stung was a few years ago while gathering firewood in the backcountry. Up my shorts and 4 stings right on the jewels! Now that hurt!
