Now that's a really weird event.
I've seen bear scat on or around the AT as late as mid-December. Given the warmth of our fall so far I'd expect a late start to their winter snooze.

So what happens to the orphaned cubs? I hate that the bear was euthanized. :(

Frankly I never realized the black bear population was that strong near Frederick. I don't know her specific neighborhood, but I know the area well and have never seen one.

I must have read the article too fast and missed that part. Good to know, but I still don't like the fact that they killed an animal for doing something that comes naturally to it.

It's very close to Gambrill State Park. I've heard of bears in the Watershed there, but haven't seen one myself there.

I was always more concerned by snakes in Gambrills after a trusted source told me there were copperheads and maybe timber rattlesnakes. One more reason to wait for winter for my hiking trips...

Frankly I never realized the black bear population was that strong near Frederick. There's a bear on Sugarloaf Mountain in MoCo and we've had sightings along the C&O trail all the way into Bethesda. They and turkey are coming back! Now I still discount the supposed cougar sightings.

Now I still discount the supposed cougar sightings. Small populations can be quite elusive. We don't have any down here either...officially. Unofficially, I may or may not know a guy who may or may not have physical proof of their existence. If the state acknowledges the existence of a healthy population, they have to have a management plan, etc., which costs money and manpower...two things they don't have enough of. So, the cats don't exist on paper and it's all good.

I had no idea about the bear sightings on the C&O Canal; nor had I heard about the bear on Sugarloaf. I need to always check here before my weekend hikes!
