From now on when I hike, I am thinking of taking a baked sweet potato for a snack. My cousin extols the nutrition in sweet potato's, and I am thinking of taking one for trail snacking. One problem though: I have never seen anyone snacking on a sweet potato.

I don't see why not? For long bike rides I'll sometimes steam red potatoes and season them.

So? Take it anyway if you'd like it. You could also do sweet potato chips or something. They'd be lighter.

There is a high dork factor to all this. I don't mind doing it as long as someone has done it first & not gotten laughed at. Vanity must be served.

Who's going to be out there to laugh at you? I wouldn't carry a baked sweet spud for more than a day, both because of weight and to be careful of spoilage, but if you find it yummy and want to gnaw on one as you hike, go ahead. I'd find it a little hard to just eat plain and cold, but you might have a different reaction.
FWIW, on day-hike lots of people carry containers of whatever cold leftovers they can lay a hand on. I've done it. Don't be limited by sandwich-and-gorp thinking!

I've taken a baked potato and eaten it on the trail with butter and salsa. Like your sweet potato idea it's heavy, but filling. Just be aware that it probably won't be warm unless you stick it in a thermos.

My wife and I have taken potatos on backpacks. We have eaten potatos and boiled eggs out to 5 days.
A bite of cheese, a meat stick, some potassium, and potato goes well together for a no cook lunch.
We have taken yams, which we eat within 2 days.
The butter packets from Chick-fillet are made to last 8 months without a fridge, we have never kept them for that long.

I went through a mountaineering program ~30 years ago, and they recommended taking whole boiled potatoes to snack on.
I did that on a few climbs, and found it satisfying.

You could also probably take an unbaked potato wrapped in foil and throw it on the coals in camp.

"Am I weird for wanting this?"
Umm, the weird ship sailed long ago. You're on a board where we all find enjoyment with strapping our possessions on our back and walking off into the woods/mountains/desert...on purpose. Nothing about snacking on a potato approaches weird in that context.
I might just try it this weekend so you won't feel like you're the first.

Apart from weight, what matters most is whether it gets eaten. If you're willing to carry it and you actually eat it, it's a winner.

If you carried along a quarter pound of butter, a cup of brown sugar and a bunch of marshmallows to go with it, then yes you would be weird. It's the marshmallows, nobody should put those on sweet potatoes. If you only carry the butter and brown sugar you're still good. Carry the food you like, carry the stuff that will fill the nutritional need and make you happy at the same time.

Seems cumbersome. Like in Thailand when they give you juice in a plastic shopping bag with a really long straw...

crawford Every time somebody talks about bringing their sweet potatoes to Thanksgiving, and they brag about it, as soon as the word marshmallow comes out of their mouth, my heart sinks. I love sweet potatoes in almost every form, but marshmallows on them just ruins it.
