How is the hiking around Antietem? I'd like to take my daughter so we can work on some learning as we walk but I'm less interested if it's heavily built up.

I've never been there, but I'd say do it anyway. Learning isn't a bad thing even if it is built up.

The north side is slightly built up, but not heavy; the south side much less so. Be sure to visit the observation tower, and check before you go if the Burnside Bridge is open. I like the Snavely Ford Trail which is in the woods along the creek and not at all battlefieldy. There's also a vista trail whose name I cannot recall on the east side, just north of MD34.
Unless you go on a Sunday, check out Burkholder's Bakery in Sharpsburg.

Thanks everyone. Burnside Bridge is currently closed and it looks like it will be for a while. I'm trying to tie the various trails together now to make one good 10 mile hike if it can be done.

Jim, personally I like Gettysburg a whole lot more. Much bigger battlefield and more interesting.

Antietam should be able to be hiked in one day. I know I've read a chapter in a book ( 50 hikes within 50 miles of DC or something like that) and the map that the book had showed a different hiking route than the self guided auto tour. If I go, I am going to hike the was the self guided auto tour directs. That is a chronological tour according to the events of the battle. Makes more sense to me that way.
