I recently hiked Rim-to-Rim at the Grand Canyon. Hiking summary is already posted in the Storytelling section. I took over 400 photos during my adventure and picked out the best 200 or so, which I've uploaded in an online photo album. Here's the link if anybody would like to see them. Thank you and happy hiking! photos.shutterfly.com/story/id/110104741372

My hiking group was 3...myself, my boyfriend, and my hiking friend Lova. The day before the trip, my boyfriend's mom was hospitalized with serious medical concerns, so he couldn't come on the adventure.

Loved your pics! One of my favorite places in the World for hiking. I think you captured most of the beauty of that route, and none of the difficulty. You weren't even looking tired, in any of the pictures.

So I'm feeling a bit lazy right now. A friend of mine just told me that yesterday he did a rim-to-rim hike both ways so his wife wouldn't have to shuttle him. He said he is feeling a bit tired now.

R-R-R in a day? Even in my early 30s I wasn't that tough, crazy, or inclined.

Yes. His text said that he started yesterday at 2:30am at the south rim and was back at the south rim at 9:30pm. However, he texted a bit ago and said he thought he was going to loose both big toenails. I think he is 51/52. Obviously much much better shape than me.

R2R2R is an awesome "ultra" dayhike. Before I moved from AZ to NY 8 years ago I with a small group of friends was doing this in the spring (just after turned on along the N. Kaibab trail and in the fall just before the water turned off. After our first time, which was total wreckage, we generally took about 16 hours for the 42 mile out and back.
It doesn't require elite fitness, but does require you manage your pace (for me this means go no faster than I can while breathing through my nose), stay hydrated, and consume about 200 calories each hour some 25-33% of which needs to be sucrose.
Last time I did it I was 55, and I am confident now at 64 I could still do it though I'd probably take somewhere between 18 and 20 hours. (my pace has slowed noticeably over the last several years but I find as long as I manage my pace I can still "go" for a long time)

I think it's great that my friend this and somewhat jealous but I'm not sure that kind of hike is for me. And not because i'm out of shape (which is true) but simply because I usually like the journey more the destination or goal. I could easily see myself doing this one way with a night down in the Canyon somewhere (assuming that is permitted) and just be thankful that I'm there.
