Back when he was doing it, Magic Sam was the guy I thought could bring the JLH groove into a more modern context. Magic Sam was awesome. And part of that is definitely a JLH groove. Sam kinda stole it, but that was normal.

I always thought George Thorogood did some good modern covers of classic blues artists. He did for sure. I went to a couple of his shows back in the early 80s, and they were intense from beginning to end. Back when he was doing it, Magic Sam was the guy I thought could bring the JLH groove into a more modern context. Magic Sam was awesome. And part of that is definitely a JLH groove. Sam kinda stole it, but that was normal. I wish he had lived longer. I've wondered about that tune for 40 years. It was kind of a throwback style and not very fashionable in his primary market, but he really dug into it. I figured it was a tribute to his roots.

I was home for about 6 weeks in Jan - mid Feb with COVID. I worked in the basement room that also has my old stereo. I ended up pulling out lots of albums I've not heard in ages while I worked. My parents bought "Still Crazy After All These Years" when it came out and somehow my younger sister and I took a liking to it when we were way too young to understand it. It's one of the albums I've held onto after all these years.

Thought this was appropriate for most people here...
If this has been shared before I apologize.

An interesting mix of genres that works:
One that highlights each instrument:

I *love* the Mingus Big Band. Mingus mostly worked with smaller groups, but I really feel like his big band, in some ways, perfected the medium.
Compared to other post-swing-era big bands, his players and charts...
•Swung like the fate of the earth depended on it
•Had an incredible sense of raw energy
•Kept connected to riff-based quality of earlier big band music
•Held on to some of the spontaneity of combo jazz performances, with more collective improvisation than most big bands. Sometimes, at just the right time, it is allowed to be cacophonous.
•Had ass-kicking soloists
Two favorites (both feature fire bari sax solos, oddly enough):
Moanin' (best bari sax feature chart ever)

I've hung out with him a few times. Really nice guy. I thought you might have. Nice to see one of the old "juke joint" guys getting some recognition.

Duck Holmes, 2009. We met him down in Bentonia where we hung out, talked, shot the breeze, had a few beers, and he played a few songs. Saw him about a week later further north at a festival. Hung out with him again in 2013 from what I can tell.

I've been watching Kavanaugh's videos for about a year. He's a guy who lurks and then springs on passersby. His favorite thing is to get people to play boogie woogie on this piano.
This is one of my favorites:

Peter Gabriel covers the David Bowie/Brian Eno song, Heroes.
It's a slow burn.
