With winter coming I always like to pack a small envelop or two of broth mix into my food gear. A nice warm cup of the stuff is a great way to pass the time as the rest of my dinner hydrates and helps warm me up. But the stuff can be a sodium bomb and that's something I need to watch.
Given the recent fad of bone broth, I'm wondering what other people may use for trail broth. Any experiences - positive or negative?

Hi Tomas,
I've taken to bringing bullion cubes when I want something hot to drink in the afternoon (or like you right before dinner) instead of coffee. I think the granules dissolve better than the cubes. Gives me a little boost when it's chilly to drink something hot.

We carry, often times, Winco, bulk, chicken soup base. Terrible and yummie stuff. At an Orential store pick up some Pho cubes. Also terrible and yummie stuff.

For me as I get older, I like soup more and more while on the trail. One of my favorites is miso soup. Light and reconstitutes nicely.

I make soups with broth, noodles, veggies (even a killer cream of mushroom soup). But I base them on bouillon, since we have no issues with sodium, and often feel the need for a bit of extra on arrival in camp. As Sarbar notes, you can get low-sodium versions, though I find that most of the flavor in commercial powders is the salt

Low salt beef bullion and a handful of dried veggies (it is a dried veggie mix, small chopped, that we buy in bulk at a local Mennonite store). The veggies add a nice sweetness to the broth and makes it a little substantial. I've been known to make a meal out of it and some Bannock Bread made fresh on the trail.
