Well, I've checked abother item off my bucket list. I traveled the entire length of Skyline and Blue Ridge pkwy. It took longer than anticipated, but the leaves were beautiful. I don't think I'll do it again though. I think I'd rather find a pretty area and hike it rather than drive around all week. It was a good trip though! We took the Auto Train to start at the northern tip of Skyline. I made a blog post about it. I'll write more about the parkway later when I find some time. It's not really a hiking post, but it's about how we got there. mamabeargreen.wordpress.com/2016/10/24/overnight-on-amtrak/

If you know what you are getting into, Amtrak can be a nice way to see the country. Looks like you and yours enjoyed your first family train foray.

Thanks for the report of the auto train! We're in Central FL also and have considered taking it to visit DC and then driving home. It would just be the hubster and I, our kids are almost 4 and 7 and though it would be cool for them, we could not afford the bigger space!
We are also considering a driving trip along the Blue Ridge but want to wait until the younger one is a more seasoned road trip traveler. We've done the Skyline drive (before kids) and part of the Blue Ridge. I would want to take a whole week.

I'm glad we did it, but I wouldn't do it again. It took too long and we didn't have enough time to hike much. Next time I'll just pick an area and stick to exploring on foot.

Or,take a page from rpcv and do it on bike(and yes some people do tour with kids,dogs,etc.).As scenic as the parkway is, it does get old fast if you are not out hiking(or cycling,c/c skiing,etc.).
