Hi, I just found this forum, and I hope that it will be a good place to learn and discuss hiking topics. I'm a frequent hiker and occasional backpacker, and I like to hear about the experiences of others.
I did have one question on my mind. I have a growing number of partially full fuel canisters, since it always seems easier to start a hike with a fresh one that to carry two (or risk running out). Has anyone found a good way to use these? Is this the kind of thing that BSA or anybody else would be able to use if donated?
Thanks, Jerry

Welcome to the forum! I would say yes! Take the partially used canisters to a local boy scout troop. They often do short day hikes to practice for longer treks which will include using a stove to cook a meal.

A common problem for sure. I just carry the partially full one and then another small one hoping that I'll use the partially full one on the trip. A little extra weight I suppose but it works for me.

The larger steel canister weighs 5 oz. The original fuel weighed 8. If you have a kitchen scale, you can get an idea of how much fuel is left inside. Most canister stoves will burn a little less than 1/3 of an ounce of fuel per 1 qt boiled water. From that, you will know how many boils you have left.

I frequently backpack with my wife. I carry the full canister and the wife will carry the partial full canister. We will use the partial up then swap canisters. Of course that method does not solve the solo trip issue.

I use mine up car camping or for hot drinks on a day hike where running out is not critical.

Unfortunately, when I finish partially using a canister, I'm usually not long from catching a plane. If I don't know someone nearby who can take it, I burn off the remainder. I have one or two stashed at my sister-in-law's place in Phoenix.

Good info, thanks! I have already gotten particular about weighing and tracking the remaining fuel, but I need to get more certain about how much I will actually need.
I'll try to find a BSA group to donate my current pile of canisters to and start over.
Thanks, Jerry

I used to check in several times a year for business, but it's been a couple years since my last visit. It's one of my favorite cities to walk around in. Maybe it's finally time for another Yosemite trip.

I take them on car-camping trips for a small gas lantern.

Interesting side story - Yosemite. For years, all the partially spent canisters "donated" were collected - taken to one place in the Valley, where one individual physically disabled the spent canisters...drove a spike through them...then safe to be taken away for safe disposal. Deemed too dangerous by the powers-that-be, (and obviously so), so last year the Park purchased a machine, designed to puncture these canisters safely...$60,000. Sad story though, the machine broke down almost immediately. Today, there is a giant cache of partially filled canisters, somewhere in the Valley, just waiting for another solution.
