Unfortunately, the timing was not right for me to go up to the White Mountains for fall foliage. The good news is that I was able to do a short hike south of the mountains this week where the foliage was still looking good. Here are a few pics and the video from the hike (Pics are under video):

Beautiful photos - Mother Nature is creating a beautiful pallette of Fall color. The first photo after the video is very dramatic.

Unfortunately, the timing was not right for me to go up to the White Mountains for fall foliage. Copy that! Our planned hike turned into Sunday drive. Sunday, Oct. 23rd weather not so good. Low temperatures, light snow, high winds, foliage wiped out. Good news: Spent a day with Curly, my hiking mentor, Triple Crowner and this summer became the 32nd White Mountain Red-Liner.

Westy. that's a lovely photo. I like the contrast between the winter white and the remnants of the brilliant fall displays. It's almost as if Mother Nature is helping the leaves settle into their winter rest after the magnificence of their fall performance. But there is that "brrrr..." factor as well!

Nice! I get a bit claustrophobic in those crowded forests, but I have to admit the fall color is amazing.

Not me. Not yet, anyway. We've never been free to travel far in the fall, and I've never seen eastern fall colors in person. I hope to remedy that in a couple of years.

The vineyards in NorCal are pretty sweet in the fall. I did alot of driving through there and up in Humboldt a couple weeks ago before my last hike. Definitely not the kinda colors people think of when they think of CA.

eastern fall colors in person Each year is different, best conditions are a wet spring and summer followed by a mid-October Indian Summer with no wind or rain to knock the leaves off. The best is Northern NY, VT, NH & Maine. Then design your own "leaf peeper" route away from the crowds through small towns. My fav would be along the NH-VT border in the Connecticut River Valley and Sunapee Region.
