Hi all- I could use some advice planning an early Sept. trip to the UP. I know holiday weekends are not ideal, but due to work schedules we're probably stuck with labor day weekend. We're going to try to push it later, but assuming we're stuck with that busy time, what would you suggest? We'll likely arrive late Thursday/early Friday, & drive back (to central Indiana) on Monday. I've been itching to see Pictured Rocks for a long time. I know that you need a permit in advance to backcountry there, so I was thinking we would try to nab a spot in one of the first-come first-served campgrounds, and day hike. That's not ideally how I'd like to do it, but I figure we can still see a lot, since we can cover ground faster w/o packs. Or... I'd also like to get to the Porkies eventually, and from what I can tell, we wouldn't have to reserve permits in advance. I also just came across Grand Island www.backpacker.com/trips/michigan/best-hikes-ever-grand-island-loop-mi/ as an alternative to pictured rocks. This link calls it "little visited", but the website for the ferry looks super-touristy. I've also thought about North Manitou... we've been to Sleeping Bear a few times, but never to the island(s). Suggestions? I know we'd like a Great Lake to be part of the scenery, but beyond that... I need help narrowing it down. I'm terrible at decision making. Thanks in advance!

You can do the Chapel Loop at Pictured Rocks as a day hike and it is magnificent. We spent three days in that street a few years ago and could have stayed longer but you would see everything in a fairly leisurely 9.4 mile day hike. I would expect a lot of people.
Grand Island is an interesting place. Even though the tour bus gets to most of the cool places and a ranger delivers firewood to many of the designated campsites, the place maintains a backcountry feel on much of the island. I would expect lots of day trippers if the weather is good. If, however, you get to the far end of the island, there is a remote designated campsite just off a beautiful beach and you will most likely have the whole area to yourselves.
I've hiked in the Porkies over Labor day before and it wasn't too crowded once you get away from the Lake f the Clouds area.
Whether you choose any of these three places this year, they should all be on your list.

This is well after the fact but Grand Island is a great place to check out. Trout Bay is beautiful, and you can find good solitude on the northern part of the island.
North Manitou is great for beach walking.

If you want solutude, it will be tough to find in Pictured Rocks over labor day. I have backpacked there twice: once in early June, once over Labor Day. VERY different experiences. It is a beautiful place, unfortunately it is not large enough to ditch the crowds over a holiday weekend in the best areas of the park. Then the park pretty much clears out but even then you'll run into a handful of hikers during the day. If one is after solitude that time of the year you'd be better off hiking the NCT from Two Hearted River to Grand Marias. Or better yet the Fox River Pathway.

I'm looking at some of your trips, thinking you must be Chicagoans and then I realize I work with your wife, Molly, LOL! Small world
