Hi!
I'm looking to do my first long hike (maybe 100 miles?) sometime in November. I'm located in Southern California, but am willing to travel a reasonable distance within the lower 48. Any suggestions of areas to check out where nighttime temperatures aren't going to be freezing? I looked at the PCT but desert temperatures at night are too low.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Does it really get that cold in the southern desert? It's not too hard to stay comfortable with overnights down around 30 if you have good gear, mainly a bag.
I'd say check out the southern reaches of the AZ Trail, or maybe some long loop options in Los Padres around Santa Barbara or Ojai. But even those places will get very cool at night.

Thanks for the tip! I ended up finding a 53 mile hike along Catalina Island where the nighttime lows through November and into December are in the mid-lower 50's, and upper 60's during the day. Plus, being my first "real" hike, and my first solo hike, it's probably best that I stay at campsites where there is at least some civilization, just in case. Other than the $170 it costs to get there and camp for 3 nights, it seems perfect for me.

Have you checked this site?: socalhiker.net/You could do a hundred miles on the southern end of the Condor Trail. Save this idea for later - it's a rough trail but a good idea with some experience. Lots of trails in the Los Padres NF you would like in the cool season.

Yes, I am familiar with socalhiker.net. TBH, it's where I stole my name from lol With that site I learned about the 14 mile loop up and over Mount Wilson, which I'm doing on Friday. Alltrails.com is another one I use frequently. I think as far as this thread goes though, I'm going to try the 50 mile Trans Catalina in a few weeks. If that goes well, maybe I'll try my hand at some colder nights in the desert and do the first 100 of the PCT.
Thanks for the advice!

I would strongly encourage you do to a few 2-3 day trips before planning a week-long outing. You will learn what works for you, and what doesn't. Problems that would be a minor inconvenience on an overnight trip can have more serious consequences on a longer expedition, especially in a remote area.
