When I see an opening, I am quick to take advantage to put in a plug for gear that I am fond of; such Zpacks and Sawyer. Through other plugs about gear, Enlightened Equipment, I have learned about gear that I am chomping at the bit to purchase. I think that allowing companies to introduce themselves to this community, with links, should be allowed. The mom and pop companies need to start somewhere. Quite a number of the members on this site are experienced backpackpackers. A new company who is willing to work with us with testing out their gear in exchange for a gear review, is a good niche for Backpackers Basecamp.

This board does not allow advertising. As such, members can recommend something they use and like, but a merchant cannot link to a page where direct purchasing takes place. Even when a company rep stops by to talk, it is requested that they identify the outfit they work for, and refrain from just touting their own product. All of this is in the Learning about the Forums thread pinned to the top of the Trailhead Register. Part of our TOS.
Recently, we have had 2 different posters take different approaches. One was touting a sunburn remedy as a sunscreen product, and it was removed. The other started his own company, and complied with our wishes that the link be put in his signature area. He is still here.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Manufacturers are more than welcome to participate in the forums. They can answer questions and such - just simply not advertise their wares.

I think that allowing companies to introduce themselves to this community, with links, should be allowed. Problem is, while a few that make/sell truly relevant gear would be respectful and "introduce" themselves in a helpful way, it would immediately turn into a flood of spam, much of which would not even be relevant for backpacking, in which the actual helpful posts would be lost. I'm sure owners/reps from manufacturers can participate in the forum outside of advertising.

I'm sure owners/reps from manufacturers can participate in the forum outside of advertising. That's basically what we ask them to do, except we expect them to make their affiliations clear (I think for obvious reasons). Franco is an example of someone who participates for real, and brings up his gear only if asked about it. (What Tigger said.) When the posts are spam (and there are plenty), we Mods try to nuke it as fast as possible. Zeke is good at that. Where there seems to be hope, we remind them of the rules of the road, and give them a second chance. When they are selling forged term papers or time-shares in Mali, they are toast. It's a bit fuzzy, but has worked for years.

I'm not going to do this, but it would almost be better to have a vetted participant directory of companies with a brief description of what they do and the link. That being said, it's fairly easy to come across cottage industry stuff if you're looking in the right threads. I'd rather have to find companies in context than see the forum showered in spam.
