So I was planning on being in spain during warmer times but ended up having a bad delay in my trip causing me to be there until february. I'll be experiencing night temps as low as 30 degrees. Here is my gear list: Sleeping bag- 40 degrees(comfort), 32 degrees(limit) - www.mountaindesigns.com/store/products/10125/md-travelite-330-stdSleeping pad - 4.5 r value - www.rei.com/product/846673/big-agnes-q-core-sl-sleeping-padtent - 3 season - www.bigagnes.com/Products/Detail/Tent/FlyCreekUL2My pack is pretty full since I'm carrying a lot of climbing gear(the purpose of the trip) so if I were to replace my sleeping bag I'd need to probably get a 20 degree bag that could pack down to somewhere near the size of my 40 degree one... I also don't have $500 to throw on a bag like that haha. I've never used my gear in these types of conditions so I'm not sure how to prepare for them, what are my options to get a comfortable night of sleep? I'm not a skinny guy so I don't get cold all that easily(I'm 5"9 180 lbs) so hopefully that will help. I've got long johns, pajama pants, a fleece, socks, gloves, and a beanie I could wear to sleep. I've got a silk liner I could use inside my bag. If I use all of that, do you guys think that I'll be able to brave 30 degree temps with my gear? I've read that you can get a lot of bang for your buck by stacking sleeping pads, so I was thinking of buying a crappy foam pad to put under mine. If I do that, do you guys think I'll be set? Is buying a different sleeping bag and throwing mine away the best course of action?

You can pick up a cheap fleece liner on Amazon for under 20 bucks. They are a bit bulky, but should add 10 degrees or so. A foam pad may be worth the 10 bucks too.

Costco is selling a down blanket that weighs 1 lb, 700 fill power, $20. I made one into a summer quilt or also could be used as a liner to boost the temp of a bag/quilt by 10 degrees or more.

Does that 40 F bag have room for your frame and additional layers without compressing things?

tigger is the pro at turning a 40-degree bag into a winter bag. He can stop by and explain, but he does it by wearing warm clothes to bed, including (especially) a warm hat.

tigger If you really want to page a poster, tag them. Next time they visit, a bubble will notify them, as long as they have that feature checked.

I don't see why you'd need a foam pad, an r-value of 4.5 should take you down into the teens. If the external temp goes down to 30, the temp inside your tent will usually stay noticeably warmer, so you may not get much colder than the mid 30s. I'd just augment the bag with clothes. I have a silk liner, in my opinion it does not add any warmth at all. You're better off with good baselayers, wool socks, and a hat.

Choose a warmer camping site to set up the tent and sleeping bag in. Sheltered from wind, using all the guylines to keep the tent from billowing and losing all the interior warm air. Away from dampness in meadows and near water. Away from mountain valleys or exposed ridge lines.

A wild storm is tigger's Disneyland LOL! I was just flying (and driving) back from Disneyland. I stretch a +40 degree bag down to 0F easily. I use what is currently called the Thermarest Z-Lite combined with my Thermarest NeoAir. I use a +40 Golite Featherlite down bag, A balaclava, down jacket with hood, Gore Windstop fleece pants, midweight fleece thermals, Smartwool Expedition weight socks, and Sierra Designs Down booties.
