More interested in this from a sociological perspective than a purely practical one: Say you had a device on your hiking trip that allowed you to send as many preset texts to someone in the outside world as you liked, but you could only preprogram three different texts. So, you could have, for example, one that said, "Don't worry; everyone's okay," and another that said, "We've just reached the trailhead and are walking to the car." What three messages would you preprogram into your device? Rules of the game: - Limit of 140 characters per message.
- You're on a 6-day hike with a total of 4 people
- The maximum distance from a road is 10 miles.
- It is a moderately strenuous hike in a National Park with a group of moderately experienced hikers.
- This is completely apart from any SOS capabilities the device might have.
- You can assume that people in the outside world can send you texts via this device.
- Assume also that you can send custom text messages if you need to but prefer to have the most useful and frequently used messages in your presets because the custom messages are prohibitively expensive.
Interested to see what people would do.
Thanks.
Paul

Please have the beer cold when I get there. Call the Crematorium. Miss you!
ETA: You've been gone nearly a year since posting last. Any good Trip Reports?

"Don't worry; everyone's okay," Can't think of any message better calculated to start me worrying!

But to see if I can answer the question... 1. Weather is beautiful, wish you were here. 2. Weather is here, wish you were beautiful 3. Oh, crap!

I would have no interest in this feature. I text when I arrive if I can. I figure someone will notify loved ones if I die or I'm injured, otherwise I have no interest in being contacted.

I would have no interest in this feature. I don't think the OP is looking for real answers, at least not for products. At any rate, he's not getting any :D I thought it was a call for smart-ass comments, as did Zeke, but I could be wrong...Still--see if you can come up with anything better than we did!

P.S. I missed the part about being able to receive texts...yeah, not something I want, though there may be a time when it will be good to have the ability, what with aging parents and all.
I just thought of another good message: "I'm backpacking and you're at work. Nyah, nyah, nyah!"

"It's OK - I'm with RanD and TDale." "Send bacon!" "There's a magazine?"

This sounds like a real question posed as theoretical. Spillenger, have you bought (or planning to buy) a DeLorme and have a trip coming up that you're planning for?

This sounds like a real question posed as theoretical. That is probably true. But the result is entertaining. "I'm with RanD and TDale" is almost as panic-inducing as "everyone's okay."

Hiking with these four is like herding crickets Beer ran out at mile 2...natives are getting restless Where did we leave the car?
or if I'm being more serious:
In camp, things going well On trail, moving smoothly Heading out to vehicles, everyone healthy

On schedule and on target. Behind schedule. Will make it later than expected. Meet us at the destination. We are ready for pickup.

I like those, Grace. Though #2 might be something to say to the member of the party who is required to carry the vodka :D

Sounds a lot like Spot. Have fun coming up with messages, then think "What happens if the unit malfunctions, or you lose it, or the battery goes dead?"
What will the person/people monitoring your messages do when they don't hear from you for several days.
I used to own one of these. I switched to a PLB and said "If you don't hear from me, I'm probably fine."
