^Not really running up 14ers, but if you think that is a contributing factor to why I am destroying trail runners, thanks. Most trail runners don't run steep up hills. Are you really wearing out the forefoot before the rest of the shoe?

Not familiar with this; who makes them?

Are you really wearing out the forefoot before the rest of the shoe? Yep. The tread there is pretty much gone first. Other point I have thought of, I do ~1000'/day of stairs (up and down) in my building. With a 14-4E, can't exactly hit the stair tread with the entire foot. ((edit: maths are hard) This works out to about an extra 1.2 miles worth of footfalls or about 1/10+ of my total steps/day). Yep just checked with a quick (10) story up and down no heel strikes except on landings. Thoughts?

Really interested, because I have done a couple rounds of physical therapy for injuries, complete with gate analysis. Purportedly walking/running gate normal these days. Never thought to have them check me on stairs.

This is bad form, at least the way trail running is taught. You should flat foot the uphills to keep your Achilles stretched out. Leaning into the hill really gives a good stretch. Trail running is taught? Me, I just went and started running on trails. And when the hill is really steep, flat footing isn't possible. Of course, nowadays, neither is running! :D Most of my running alternates between heel strike and toe strike, probably because I'm not in good running shape and that extends the distance I can manage

Are you really wearing out the forefoot before the rest of the shoe? I would guess that might also happen on the downhills? What do I know? I shred the inside of the heel counter in about 3 days, then wear off the soles in a race between forefoot and heels.

They seem to be teaching a lot of things that I just went and did in my youth. Our cross country really was a race across the countryside (one course even had a stream crossing if there had been a recent rain). Not saying teaching is a bad thing, I might not be sporting some of the injuries I have if I had better technique. ;-)

Then just went for it. I'm still here, so guess it worked okay. edit: wish my family was wealthy enough to send me on a NOLs trip though.

Try flat footing even the steepest of trails. It is hard at first, but gets easier. It really helps to stretch out the Achilles and calf.

It really helps to stretch out the Achilles and calf. Given my notoriously tight muscles, I'd better stretch them out first... Not saying teaching is a bad thing, I might not be sporting some of the injuries I have if I had better technique. ;-) This is a good point, sir. I may be in the same place.

LOL. I was never taught how to trail run, but I was given a lot of advice-much of it unsolicited! I also get to pick the brains of some very good therapists at the gym I go to.

My brother-in-law convinced me to try running shoes on one of our trips. Big mistake for me. I realized I need the ankle support that boots provide. Plus I got plantars faciitis baaaaad and now suffer from it regularly (but luckily found ways to remedy it).
But it did take me another 10 years to realize I needed larger boots!

About 6 years ago, I got the book 'Chi Running', my wife and I greatly benifited from following through with the lessons.
