I was hiking solo with my Austrailian sheepdog in the Selway Wilderness and ran upon another solo and his chocolate lab. He was moving out of a water access spot, so I moved in. In the process his 120 pound dog started humping my 40 pound dog, both male. The other hiker spoke to his dog but nothing changed until I picked up my dog to move on. A couple hours later, we passed the same dude camped 100 feet off the trail. His dog again came to the trail we stood on and started humping my dog again, who began whimpering and climbing up me to get away. A few words from the other hiker accomplished nothing, so I kicked the chocolate in the butt, which brought the event to a halt. The other hiker became irate. Was I right to not allow my dog to get butt-raped on the trail? Was shoving the bigger dog off inappropriate? Or was the other hiker in the wrong?

After finding humor in your story, I came to conclude that you were protecting your property. I agree on both counts. I would never stand by and let my animals be abused, anywhere. Dogs are often curious about llamas and many like to harass them. I tell (warn) people to control their dogs because they won't like the results if I have to do it for them and if they will please take control of their dogs we can avoid hard feelings and injury. That usually works, especially when they realize how serious I am.

Perhaps unknown to you, dogs on the trail is a hot button issue around these parts. Perhaps not, and you are just trying to start a flame war.
IMO, any place where dogs are allowed to be on the trail, it is the onus of the owners to keep them under control at all times, either voice command or leash. Since this owner seemed to not be up to the task, you were certainly within your rights to discipline the dog. I think you also showed restraint in not disciplining the owner as well.

Yep, don't get us started on unleashed (or out of control) dogs on the trail... ;-|
