I normally hike below tree line and I don’t use sunscreen. I think side effects of all sunscreen lotions, including mineral ones, overweight their protection utility.

What side effects are you talking about? Some of us need more SPF than others. I have been using SPF 50 products for 25 years, with no recognizable side effects. Now, I even use clear zinc products on my face to help even more.

redforest, are you referring to the large mix of chemicals in sunscreen? What would you offer as being equally or more effective? Sunscreen is mandatory, even just for driving.

I would offer covering up.
And mineral sunblock (“clear zinc”) for rare occasions.

I tend to agree. And,don't forget a diet high in essential oils and deeply pigmented fruits, vegies and beverages(ie teas, coffees, mate, etc.)for a healthy dose of nature's own sunscreens.

I've yet to read any evidence that suggests that you can use diet to replace sunscreen. i do use a lot of clothing to cover up, but at times and in some conditions, that's just not practical. Not to mention that I can't cover my whole face. Without sunscreen I can stay in the sun about 15 minutes. And yes, I eat lots of fruits and veggies and drink coffee and eat nuts for wonderful oils and all that. I'm still not ditching my sunscreen unless I move to Antarctica.

it is not even touted as a sun screen product in the ad. It is touted as a remedy for sunburn, which is what will happen if you rely on it instead of using an SPF product of sufficient strength for your own skin.

It strikes me that jojoba oil is like basting a turkey! A perfect golden burn. And the ad was an ad, otherwise he would have just said "moisturizer" with out a link to a $15 specific bottle of product. It looks like an ad, it offers a direct sale,...it's an ad! Pfffft! Now it's just an opinion.

Thanks bp2go,I did not see the link. Just to be clear, I was not advocating any specific product or solution.I tend to take a natural ,active approach to experiencing the outdoors. That includes acclimating to the conditions that I am likely to experience, including the sun. My approach will not be appropriate for everyone's situation or approach to life, except, perhaps,in a wholistic sense and even then some people are just more sensitive to the sun than others. Which,is why I said "I tend" to agree(with the approach)not "everyone"drop your cheesecake and run buy Jojoba oil...

That includes acclimating to the conditions that I am likely to experience, including the sun. I'm trying to figure out what this means. It's been pretty well shown that while you may be able to reduce obvious burns by getting a "base" tan, the UV damage continues, including in laying down that tan. You just can't "adapt" to UV.

I'm good about protecting my face, but admitted, the rest of my person sometimes takes a hit. It's those long days when it starts out cool then I'm sunburned before it occurs to me to put some on.

After having suntan lotion explode in my pack, I'm sticking to long sleeved shirts with a built-in SPF. Ever try to get suntan lotion out of every nook and cranny of a modern headlamp?

That's what you get for not bagging it.

That's what you get for not bagging it. In a sense it was, ... just with other stuff in a cuben fiber zip container (Eagle Ck ... on its last legs anyways and double bagging wasn't in my to-do list on a 1-month trip with 6 am load outs). Not sure if bagging in a seperate plastic bag would prevent a blow out when faced with bear can mid-trip Going with a lightwt tin of sun screen next summer btw. If anyone wants a used headlamp, check eBay pretty soon ...
