I don't know how to quote There is a list of How To info in the "Learn..." section. Here is the QUOTE info: bpbasecamp.freeforums.net/post/12/threadIt takes a little time to catch on to these tricks. And if you don't like beets, you haven't had them prepared correctly. They are not only delicious (pickled, please) but amazing for keeping blood pressure well controlled! Glad you're enjoying the forum.

Welcome, mg.
I first started backpacking with a friend. But, he lost his desire for long multi-nights after a few months. But, the call of the wild was strong for me and I was determined to keep it up. So, with some apprehension and a lot of planning, I did my first overnight alone. It was perfect. No talking, no worrying about someone else's pace, the backcountry sounds and sights are addictive. When I started school I would asked a few folks along for overnight hikes and would set the time aside. But, most would back out but, since it was planned, I went anyway. So, I've became primarily a solo hiker and have been for 30 years.
Do it enough and it will become second hand. I like beets and beats.

Aha! Thank you the call of the wild was strong for me This sums everything up nicely for me! I have car camped alone and base camped alone. I have taken my daughters (now grown) out on multiple tent camping trips. But there has always been a level of comfort in knowing where my safety nets are (ranger station, people, roads, communication, etc). Now, my goal is to get as far away from that as possible and still remain safe and found while getting lost I am probably going to follow your footsteps! I have a few group hikes lined up to test the gear that I have and take notes.
