I am new here and to the trail! I have been a base camper for most of my life but am giving it a go at transitioning to getting a little farther off the grid and into the places that I really want to see. I am here to learn and maybe get some sound advice I travel solo so I thought that maybe to gain some experience, I would go on a few group hikes (in and out-overnight). After two failed attempts to connect with other groups, it is looking like I have to just dive in. I am curious how others started out on their first solo hikes. For now, I am not venturing too far outside of the trails or state parks. I plan on doing a few short overnight hikes in Pisgah and Smoky Mountains. In December, I travel to Iceland but those will all be day hikes. Nevertheless, I am really glad to have found this forum! I don't know why I didn't start here sooner! mg P.S. I like bacon.

P.S. Good answer!
You might also pick up some good info in the Women's Forum located down the list a bit. Lots of other info right here, or in Gear. That pinned thread up top of the gear section is a must read for nearly everyone. It will answer some of the more common questions. Welcome to our community.

Welcome! Glad you found the place. I appreciate your quick bacon statement, but how about brussel sprouts?

Welcome, mg! I admit that though I did my share of solo hiking back in the day, I was lucky enough to fall in with some backpacking folks when I started, and got a number of trips with them first. But you can certainly do it diving in--as Zeke says, we've some threads on that very subject (there's an on-going discussion of solo hiking in the women's forum).
And what about beets and kilts?

My first solo was an accident. My friend had a last minute cancellation, so I went ahead and did Pix Rox shoreline trail solo. Really enjoyed it, though I have not done another solo since.

I know there are several other threads where a new member asked for advice, bit I still think @bjaye has the best thread of staring out for a first solo. Read the messages and see how ell it worked out. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the insanity! From your selections of GSMNP and Pisgah I assume you are from my neck of the wood (Carolinas). You'll find a great wealth of knowledge in the forums.

Welcome
Do you have any specific concerns? Gear? Being alone? Backcountry skills (setting up camp, cooking, stream crossing, etc.)?

Welcome from the Big Sky country. If you've come to learn, you've certainly come to the right place. The combined knowledge of the outdoors and backpacking, as well as a myriad of other subjects, on this forum is incredible.

Everything you could possibly ever want to know about beer and brussel sprouts is right here - and a little backpacking info too. I LOVE my thread; before every hike (3 total), I have gone back and read it all again. This forum rocks!
Welcome!

Thank you all for the warm welcome and the resources! I am glad that I found this place! Oh, and I don't particularly hate all of the aforementioned things except beets. I don't like beets. Beats, yes. Beets, no.
Retiredreddog: (I don't know how to quote you) but yes, I am from the Carolinas! I have been to GSMNP many times but never off the road. I really want to hit some of those spots.
Thank you for the link over to the women's forum. Very helpful!
