Grettings! My fiance and I are looking to take a backpacking trip, and I was wondering if anyone could make a recommendation for hiking location(s) that meet our criteria: We are looking to climb up to a peak with a nice view of the surrounding area, but we want it to be a back country experience, not a day hike with a lot of other people mucking about. For distance we want it to be at least a couple days round trip, but a 5 day week would probably be our max time. I have been checking out locations on the Appalachean trail, but I was wondering if any of the fine people on this board could proffer helpful suggestions, there or elsewhere (I'm a pretty experienced backpacker, but she has not been on anything longer than a day hike)

Other than the AT, any further narrowing down the geography?

Give us a state, or an area within your driving range. Whites? Pa?

The loop hike from Twenty Mile Ranger Station to Gregory Bald in the GSM NP. I used this hike as a first bp trip for my daughters.

A favorite loop in GSMNP is from Cosby campground, up to site #34 and then site #29. You can loop up further to the AT to Cosby knob and Mt. Cammmerer depending on how many miles you want to do each day. It has been about 8 years since we've hiked there so others might be able to chime in with a better route. Maddron Bald is supposed to be beautiful, but it was so foggy the day we were there :(
