Hi there! Has anyone been backpacking near Montrose, CO. In the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness or the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation area? Thanks!

You can make a pretty decent backpacking trip in the Dominguez-Escalante NCA. Another option, if you are trying to find a less cold/wet option than the higher mountains, is the Little Book Cliffs WSA. You could put together a nice loop hike AND see some wild horses while you are at it!

So when are you going and what are your goals? My suggestion is to look at the options off the Silverton railroad. But there is plenty more. If you will have a 4wd, that will open up more options.
