This is exactly why I'll be switching to a flavor of linux when my Windows 7 computers die. I suppose this might be a matter of opinion but the new gui is not easier navigate. Using classicshell (classicshell.net), you can make the interface of Windows 10 to look and feel pretty much identical to Windows 7. There are a few minor tweaks that need to be done, Turning off auto-default printer, etc. but I sometimes forget I am running Windows 10 on some of my rigs.

A few days ago I was browsing the nature forum. Today the desktop photo is a bird. Coincidence? I think not. It distressed me a bit that so many people are okay with this kind of thing. We are watching you, comrade...

We are watching you, comrade... Everything internet related is collected and stored. Nothing is deleted. To think otherwise is naive. Don't say or do stupid things while online.

Y'all realize you can switch off the background changing, right? I have a folder of pretty images (some from backpacking trips of mine) that I set the background to periodically scroll through. It doesn't ever do anything else. If you want a blank background, or a single image of your choosing, great, set that. I can understand folks may not like the Default setting, but complaining online rather than finding out how to change it seems a bit counter-productive. It isn't hard to do, at all.
And yes, the background changing to a bird shortly after you browsed the Nature forum is, likely, a coincidence, actually.

It distressed me a bit that so many people are okay with this kind of thing. We are watching you, comrade...The days of Big Brother have been here for quite awhile, but it's not the government. Believe me, I have tried. I change my desktop periodically, but I cannot find a way to change the photo that appears immediately after booting. I'll try again when I have more patience. I'd rather be outside though that fussing with trying to find ways to change something that appears as soon as the computer boots, and something for which I can't find the means to change. And it's not in the desktop settings, or if it is, it's disguised. I once saw a flash in the sky shortly before tripping over my shoelaces. Obviously, aliens made me do it. Well, that's a better explanation!

I once saw a flash in the sky shortly before tripping over my shoelaces. Obviously, aliens made me do it. See, this is why we need scientists. Cause and effect. Correlation equals causation. If it wasn't for the luminiferous ether, you couldn't have even seen the light, much less tripped over your shoelaces. The aliens usually only blind you with that flash long enough to drop off another bigfoot in the woods to spy on us.

I've been on Win10 for 2 weeks now & my first impression is that it stinks. Loading web pages is way slower the XP. I tried to load Chrome last night. I clicked RUN & went to bed 2 1/2 hours later when I got up to get a snack, it hadn't done anything. It is a brand new machine HP.

I'm back on Win10 again - have been for the last week or so. The system seems slightly (ever so slightly) peppier than before, after the "Anniversary Update". Returning from my 2 week Win7 excursion, I now see that most everything is relative: Win7 has it's own little "hiccups" - or, at least, perceived hiccups and deficiencies after having visited the upgraded world of Win10. Outside of the "free" part, I upgraded almost entirely because I think I understand that Win7 is destined to end up on the OS ash heap in time because it isn't sufficiently "modern". The world keeps turning: gotta keep up. I loved Win7, but Win10 is the future (as far as that goes, and that might not be very far), like it or not. What I found was that, after a week or two on Win7, it too began to slow down a bit. I am now, more than ever, suspicious that my real problem is overtaxed "ancient hardware", not the new software. I also found that this system (ancient Core Quad Q6600 Dell desktop), though ostensibly a 64 bit instruction set computer, was apparently running 32 bit versions of XP, Win7 - and now, via the "free update" - Win10. There may be technical reasons for the use of a 32 bit OS, but this is clearly not optimal, since I know that some functions of Win10 are not present in a 32 bit version, and there may be some sort of "performance hit". Maybe. Not that I really know. At my age, people seem to suffer from "brain melt". (I blame internet fembots and the severe lack of "intelligent simulated sextalk". It's a wasteland out there, folks! Come to think of it, perhaps I should get back into software generation and AI for dating sites...) Hey, I remember Eliza, and I was in love with her. Best damn automated therapist I ever encountered. She was a life-saver on those long mid shifts. Not really the real Eliza, but she'll do. Ahem. I can dream, can't I? (To quote a very old line from a favorite cartoon.)psych.fullerton.edu/mbirnbaum/psych101/Eliza.htmThere's also this business of all the added peripherals I have now, with the same ol' hardware. I have a 2TB hard drive and a 2TB external drive on this system, and there are assorted video and audio servers running full time - and that is pushing it to the limit for this hardware, I suspect. It's a lot like trying to live in a 2 bedroom WWII house in South Texas with 2 60" widescreen TVs (with associated DVRs), stereo, computers, tablets & phones w/ chargers where needed, a full set of modern kitchen appliances, hairdryers, electric toothbrushes and central A/C. And you drive a plug-in hybrid. Something's gonna blow, and it probably won't be the wind. Anyway, probably time for a "hardware upgrade".

It is a brand new machine HP. "Brand new machine". If it's a 6th gen i5/i7, then you might have a bitch about performance. I have learned from experience: AMD sucks! So don't go there. Also, a lot depends on the "support stuff" on the motherboard, though I suspect that not many folk pay much attention to all that. My daughter is attempting to build herself a "gaming system" from scratch (I don't do that anymore, after 3 "eBay builds" with used server stuff. Tuning the system to work properly is difficult. That's why we buy turnkey systems from HP/Dell/etc.): she's doing a water-cooled CPU thing in a smaller case using a 5th gen i5. She's trying to keep the cost under $1000.

I made the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on my OLD Dell E7500 with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, so I don't want to hear any complaints from you fancy quad-core folks. I never had any issues with Windows 7, but the switch to Windows 10 has been fine too. I think I prefer the look and feel of Win10 over Win7.
I have had one issue, which I haven't been able to solve yet, which is that my USB WiFi adapter isn't working and caused the update to fail when it was plugged into the machine during the machine. It must be a driver issue, I'm guessing, but it's the one issue that I've had thus far.

The only major issue I have had with Windows 10 is the upgrade makes my on board network adapter drop my connection at random. I had a USB network adapter lying around and that works flawlessly.
