Headed in via East Rosebud in just over a week. I'd also be interested if anybody has reports of the area.

I was in the Beartooths from August 1 to August 6. Days 1 and 2 were sunny and very warm, and day 3 started out the same. We went from East Rosebud to Elk Lake on day 1, elk lake to Martin Lake (above Lake at the Falls) on day 2, and Martin Lake to Desolation Lake on day 3. Clouded up in the afternoon and we got some periodic rain at Desolation Lake. Day 4 we had rain on and off all day, got stuck at Lake of the Winds for a while with steady rain and fog but we had enough clear weather to get to Fossil Lake and set up a very nice camp. It rained there on and off throughout the afternoon and evening. Day 5 we headed to Medicine Lake, with a dreary drizzly morning. In the afternoon the wind howled and clouds were blowing through like crazy, we got some more rain in the evening. Day 6 we hiked back to the trailhead, that was the coldest night we had and the morning was very chilly, we broke camp quickly and made for the trailhead with haste. The clouds threatened for much of the morning, but we never did get any rain, though the wind was still gusting pretty badly in parts of the canyon. The day was pretty chilly until we got about to Rainbow Lake, where it was still chilly during wind gusts but of course the lower we got the warmer it got.

Swimswithtrout: Punishment is right, but I won't make that mistake again! I was just glad we didn't get the snow that came through the week or so before this hike.

I used mosquito spray once during the trip, at the Scat lakes. They were a bit annoying at Desolation, but still not bad.

Thanks for the report. We're heading in on Sunday from Lady of the Lake trailhead. Bugs were real bad last year, maybe we'll get lucky this time!

Hey, this is Joe, PanatomicX's hiking bud from this trip to the Beartooths. I'd like to clarfify 2 things.
There was NOT "no bugs". I swatted 1 (one) at 605pm on Wednesday.
And when he refers to liking "grass", he means walking on it, as opposed to talus at a 40% incline. And as opposed to the other kind.
I also would like to mention we had the pleasure of meeting HikerJer at the end of our trip for a dinner in Red Lodge. His (and others) advice has been extraordinarily useful in trip planning many times, and it was great to meet him and say thanks. He clearly had no idea just how helpful he has been to us flatlanders.
Well, now back to my house at 23 feet a.s.l,. where the air somehow seems different. The gear is airing out and the dog is reminding me I owe him a walk to the pond.
