I originally started to post this on the trail trash-talk thread but decided to start a new one. Every year the Yosemite Climbing Association (YCA) and numerous gear suppliers (i.e., Black Diamond) sponsor the "Yosemite Facelift" in late September. It is in essence a general clean up of the park, ranging from general trash pick up to some serious removal of obsolete infrastructure . In exchange for their work, participants get free camping (albeit shared with other participants). Lots of activities and good freebies provided by the sponsors. I have been to a few and was amazed at the amount of cigarette butts I found along the roads. How so many could flick a smoke out of the car was eye opening. I found them all over the place and in very dry areas and in pine needles. Lots of plastic bags of trash as well along the road sides. The YCA and sponsors provide trash bags, picker uppers (the things with clamps on handles) and disposal of what you pick up. It is a great way of helping the financially strapped park. For this year all the free sites are already taken, but consider it for next year, or if you live in the area and don't need a campsite, think about lending a helping hand. Perhaps you could start something similar in your neck of the woods. www.yosemiteclimbing.org/facelift-2016/

Outside of smoking being a disgusting, smelly habit, it has always annoyed me that smokers think that they have some special right to litter.

I did not really mean this to be thread about smokers but more a thread about what the YCA is doing to help clean up Yosemite through volunteerism and what others can do in their local areas to do something similar.

Bueller... Bueller?
Seriously though, Yosemite is too special a place not to enjoy its own thread and I personally would love to get out for a YCA event someday. But, I think I said it in the other thread, I rarely have had my schedule/life mesh up with stewardship events.

That would be really neat to do. If only I lived closer ...
I'll be out on the trails at a local city park tomorrow, though, and I'll be picking up trash there. Every little bit helps, right?

I'd think picking up cigarette buts with those clampy picker-upper thingies would be like picking up single grains of rice with chopsticks.

We do the same thing here on the weekend closest to the 20th of September and all the schools participate in a great beach clean-up. There is always a contest for who gets the most cigarette butts, most pounds of trash and most strange trash. One year they got a barnacle covered boat that belonged to the Fukishima High School, cleaned it up and sent a group of students to Japan to return it, then they sent a group of their students to visit our high school and see the harbor rebuild from the Tsunami.
Cleaning up any place with a heavy tourist impact over the summer is a great project for the locals in September.

Hey...Yosemite gets plenty of help on this annual event. I clean-up in Yosemite, or on or off of any trail, when and where I can...for instance, a bit north-east of Yosemite, we found quite the impact and some litter left, after the Labor Day weekend, so picked up a bit and tried to disguise the trampled down illegal campsites.
There are many such organized clean-ups throughout the year, along rivers and lakes, in the Alabama Hills, our local climbing spots and in the Mammoth area, just to name a few.
Who knows, though...we may register up at Tuolumne...

Who knows, though...we may register up at Tuolumne... Go for it for next year or see if someone will let you join their campfire this year. Just keep an eye on the YCA website in May-June to secure a site. Again, the free sites get filled to capacity, but I've always enjoyed the folks I camped with.
