World's oldest snowshoe found on a glacier in Italy's Dolomites
The snowshoe from the time before Ötzi in Bolzano
Carbon-dating has shown that the rudimentary snow shoe, made of birch wood and twine, was made between 3,800 and 3,700 BC
Nick Squires 12 SEPTEMBER 2016 • 6:59PMThe shoe, which consists of an oval-shaped frame with strands of twine tied across it, was found by Simone Bartolini, a cartographer from Italy’s Military Geographical Institute, who was mapping the border with Austria. link

Cool stuff. I like the places where I feel like there's a direct line from ancient technology to ours. When you think about it, the basics of snow shoes hasn't changed in nearly 6000 years.

Ancient aliens must have showed them how to build it. No way our ancestors were smart enough on their own.

I knew I left it somewhere. I've been walking around with just one for a long time. It's been kinda awkward.

Just one? One snowshoe? The mind boggles. Well, there's a band called One eskimO, so why not?

There's a reason why no one makes snowshoes out of wood and rawhide anymore.... So they can last longer than 6,000 years ? ? ? The reason they're hard to find is they're not as "fashionably cool" as Al and neoprene, the same as exterior frame packs.

Not all "good" but I'm sure a pair of aluminum and nylon snowshoes would probably last much longer than that.....
I own a pair of Safesport snowshoes from the mid 70s's but the new ones are so much more convenient, and perform much better in powder.

Perhaps so, but the basic structure is still much the same. I was just thinking about the design...something that we can immediately recognize 6000 years later. Whereas a kid today wouldn't even recognize a phone from my childhood as a telephone.
