Do you bring one bag and a spare. If you just bring one bag how do you clean the bag in the field? Or do you bring a bag for each meal and clean them at home? How do you clean them at home? If you bring one bag for each meal, where do you store the used bags; like a oder proof bag? How many seasons and uses do you get from a bag? Whaaaat? I think you're overthinking this. They are basically the same bags as the mountainhome or whatever brand you want, are packed in. I don't reuse them unless I have to.

There for a second, I thought this needed to move over to the political board hahah. Good thread though; I was in a lot of doubt over ziploc bags actually holding boiling water. But now I know! I'm ordering my first camp stove tomorrow. Excited to put all this knowledge that I have gathered from the forums together!

If in any doubt about some new brand you might buy, test it in the kitchen sink, pouring boiling water into it there, so the mess won't be all over your floor. Freezer bags are heavier duty. Stick with ziplock brand and you'll be safe.

tick with ziplock brand and you'll be safe. Have to agree. For many things, I'm a fan of generic. But I've not found the store brand freezer bags to be as strong as the brand name, though I've used them some (I'll use the cheaper ones for things like snacks and salads where I'm not adding boiling water).

Stick with ziplock brand and you'll be safe. Add my vote of agreement to this as well. I've tried the generic freezer bags and ended up with a mess.

Add my vote of agreement to this as well. I've tried the generic freezer bags and ended up with a mess. One more vote for brand name in this case. Also, in my experience, the water doesn't have to be at a full rolling boil. Near boiling is usually good enough.

Also, in my experience, the water doesn't have to be at a full rolling boil. Near boiling is usually good enough. I use untreated water, so bring it to a full boil. But it drops off from that pretty fast on a cold morning or evening, and still works fine for most things (I try to prioritize the foods that need the most "cooking" to get water first, while it's hottest).
