I searched but didn't find an existing thread. I was awakened one evening by some calls I hadn't heard before and I thought it would be interesting to create a little sound collection of animal calls we've heard and what region they're from. I would love to learn animals by their calls, especially the nocturnal ones. I found that SoundBoard has great snippets. It's just tough to search if you don't know what animal to look for! I had never heard coyotes make this sound before but there really weren't any other logical choices. It sounded like hyenas laughing. I'm sure most of you more experienced folks hear this all the time. It's the Yipping and Huffing samples. It was multiple animals and they sounded a bit demented!

Coyotes do sound amazingly weird sometimes! I love hearing them, though. I hope someday I'll get to hear wolves.

Were you aware movies substitute sounds animals make for ones easier to record? Eagles routinely get Hawk sounds substituted for them. I suspect coyotes had their noises stuck in where hyenas appeared in movies as well. What we think of as a noise from a certain animal may be completely wrong, based on Hollywood. Rabbits don't talk, and coyotes cannot do mail order.

Rabbits don't talk, and coyotes cannot do mail order. You have totally destroyed my illusions. Are you also going to tell me that pigs can't shoot guns? Because I heard that they've moved on to AK-47s in some parts of the country.

I hope someday I'll get to hear wolves. Almost 2 years ago exactly I was on Isle Royale and 3 nights in a row we heard a wolf howl. I think there were only 2 or 3 left that year. :( But it was awesome to hear it howl. Seemed like it was coming from miles away!

This is cool. I haven't looked long enough to see if the service was free or not but I've been looking for a place that I can share my recorded nature sounds online like I do with my pics on flickr.

The iconic sound for Flipper the dolphin, which is used all over the place now, is actually a Kookaburra.

Worst night noise I ever had was camping at Lake George in the sierra. It is a developed campground I've spent many nights at. I was fast asleep. At around 2 AM the rangers let go of a few flash bangs right over my camp to scare off a bear. Man, that freaked me out.

One night I was cowboy camping in Joshua Tree. Woke up in the middle of the night with a coyote licking my face. Didn't really freak me out much as I was raised with dawgs. It was just after my perspiration. Still was a strange way to wake up.

The eerie sound of a pack of coyotes doing their high-pitched sing-song yelp is a true desert experience. It almost sounds other-worldly. One day I'll get a recording of it.
But, here is recording of some night sounds from last month's Labor Day road trip. Here are thousands of frogs and toads along a small wild river in eastern Arizona.

johntpenca, it must be something with the coyotes out in that area. I was at Twenty-Nine Palms (basically right across the highway from Joshua Tree) when I had a similar incident. I was sleeping between two huts (was way too hot inside to sleep in June!) when I had the feeling I was being watched. I awoke to see the nose of a coyote about three inches from my nose.

I awoke to see the nose of a coyote about three inches from my nose. Funny and thanks for the post..Coyotes can tear up animals pretty fast. I've never had a real problem with them myself. But they can be vicious when in packs. The best thing to do is be the dominant animal.

jeez! I hope to one day wake up to a friendly neighborhood coyote! Sounds terrifying yet captivating at the same time. I was surprised that where I am stationed in Florida, near Fort Walton beach, I see foxes scampering around base every now and then.
