Tom Bell, Wyoming rancher and son of a coal miner, openly admitted to being an environmentalist. That in itself is not likely to make anyone popular, if even welcome, in the state of Wyoming. But he did not stop there. He openly criticized officials, industry, ranching, land and wildlife management. And in the process, he founded a successful publication, High Country News to give voice to other conservationists. Living to age 92 as such a vocal maverick was quite an accomplishment, given all that. The West needs more folks like him.

It was a great read, especially the essays he wrote. I am a longtime reader of HCN.
