A third person was arrested, according to the story. An older guy, with no known connections to the young women. His luggage also had pounds of Coke, so I am guessing either he was the buyer, or another mule. I can understand how appealing such a tour might seem to young people, not thinking about "What if I get caught?" While long sentences are possible, I will bet they serve 10 or less in actuality. Yes, it was a serious drug offense, but they were not the dealers.

If indeed they were mules, the pair should thank their lucky stars they got busted in fairly liberal Australia -- and not in one of about half a dozen southeast Asian countries with death sentences on their books. The Phillippines would be a bad place to get caught right about now. The death sentence could come before the trial, maybe even before the arrest. |
