Good news. That an impressive size and well deserving of protection. The size is about 18 times the size of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem — which itself is about 10 times the size of the national park after which it is named. That makes the entire area on the order of 180 times the size of Yellowstone Park itself. But it is still a very small, but very important, part of the ocean.

Very small indeed. A physical oceanography prof of mine would start his semester by rotating a globe until all you could see was a hemisphere of complete blue, just a fringe and sprinkle of land. The Pacific and surrounding seas are a monster.

I'm not sure if you can get a direct flight from Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, but that'd be one interesting boarding announcement.

It's as if the entire Hawaiian language was based on a contest on who could conceive the longest possible word to describe something. One of my favorite Pittsburgh Steelers: First name: Chris.
