I recently moved closer to Long Hunter State Park. I've been able to enjoy the sights every other week or so. Currently planning my first overnight trip on the park's 6 mile trail. Otherwise, yeah..the heat's been a bit much for my girlfriend and I to really enjoy things unless we leave around 7 or 8 am.

I didn't get out this past weekend but got out the weekend before...
Did a maybe 15 mile overnight loop in the Ellicott Rock wilderness...
I haven't been out as much due to a few things and I was whupped and sweatin...
By the time I got to camp---there was nothing dry on me as I was drenched in sweat...
Hope to get out this upcoming weekend but not sure where
Maybe I should do what I was doing a lot of last summer----a canoe overnighter...
However on the bright side----I did manage to catch the two runs of the fare thee well shows....

Did a maybe 15 mile overnight loop in the Ellicott Rock wilderness... I was reading the Wandering Virginia blog and noticed you were doing the SE Wilderness challenge.Sounds like fun. For everyone else the idea is to hike 10+ miles in 12 wilderness areas in the SE by the end of September 2015 so it might be a little late to get started now unless you are really motivated. www.southeastwilderness50.org/dirty-dozen/

I've still been getting out. I've been using trailheads at or above 3,000ft. Even found a few car camping areas up high that feel like springtime camping.
It really isn't until the triple digit days in the valley that I won't go out.

I hear you on the gas.And here in south florida the traffic congestion is an issue as well.Since I moved from out near the everglades to near the beach I have been doing fewer wilderness trips and more walking on or near the beach. And after I have explored all remote places I want to see around here at least two to three times I need new areas to explore.I was going to suggest people below 3000' consider midnight moonlight hikes or paddling but I just got back from a 3 to 4 mile walk dripping sweat and noticed it is was still 80 with a real feel of 90.Much better than the daytime though.

Yea, but I am usually weight training or setting out on a long bike ride around then so I have been walking between 5pm and 1am lately. The midnight paddle is something some of the clubs organize around here and hiking by a full moon is always fun ,in fact my first hike into the infamous Big Cypress swamps was a night hike by a full or nearly full moon and one of the more memorable hikes I have done.

Just got back from a July 6-25 trip in the Southeast heatwave and it sucked but as usual I loved it. Saw one copperhead and three rattlesnakes and a big black bear. The worst heat days seemed to bring out the pit vipers. I'll post a trip report once I figure out where to put it here. In the Trip Reports forum or the Southern forum??
