I know a hunter that uses something similar only battery powered and he clips it on his belt. I've seen them all over the place just can't for the life of me remember who makes it.

The wife and I have been using these for some years now as we work in the yard. They seem pretty effective. We get them, and the refills, at the local grocery.

The last time I was in Canada, on a lake island in NW ontario (haven for mosquitoes), the cabin had this contraption hooked to a propane tank that attracted them to a trap and killed them. I was never once bitten, or really even saw one, except in the trap. Always have wondered why noboddy uses them in the states. Or maybe they do? I bet amaruq knows what i'm talking about.

They seem pretty effective. This is good to know. I was given one of these as a gift because the person knew about my backpacking habit. Although, I've never tried it so your experience might lead me to try it or at leas take it along next time. Have you used one hiking down a trail? I'm guessing it doesn't work as well then.

Oh! Missed your link. My eyes are pretty worn out at this point in the day. And yes, interesting they aren't available here! That would be a useful item. I always find it interesting what I can and can't get in any given place.

So it's vaporizing a chemical everyone in the room constantly breaths in. That's on the order of the Shell No-Pest strips, which have mostly went away (they emit, in a very literal sense, a nerve gas...just counting on it taking a lot less poison gas to kill an insect than it does to kill an adult human. Tricky math nonetheless). Maybe similar heath concerns keep them out of the state's? What's it emit? www.wired.com/2014/01/cdc-warning-misuse-pest-strips/ETA: So its active ingredient is "Prallethrin which is a pyrethroid insecticide" vaporize into the air. EPA: www.federalregister.gov/articles/2014/10/29/2014-25732/prallethrin-pesticide-tolerances"Prallethrin is structurally similar to Type I pyrethroids. The adverse outcome pathway (AOP) shared by pyrethroids involves the ability to interact with voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) in the central and peripheral nervous system, leading to changes in neuron firing, and ultimately neurotoxicity." in a choice between a nerve agent and DEET? I'd choose DEET. Or for chronic exposure, a bed net. I like the way my neurons are firing now just fine thankyouverymuch. Ymmv.

What ever happened to those coil thingy's that smelled like incense but probably had a neuro-toxin. They were as pervasive in Vietnam as agent orange.

That in itself is probably enough to disallow it for sale in the United States.

Despite the conspiracy theorists, the US does not allow the use of many pesticides or certain uses of pesticides that are widely used elsewhere. Many pesticides that are banned here are in wide use in other parts of the world where impact on the environment and human health are not as great of a concern. Occasional use is probably not much of a concern, but DEET is less toxic for prolonged use.

Interesting that it can be found in Britain/Europe, though. They're a lot tougher on the chemical stuff than the US. Even if you could find it on foreign sites, I'd be leery about getting some mailed in. Sounds like something the USPS might not be keen on handling/might require some sort of EPA permitting just to get it in the door.

Where are you finding all the mosquitoes? I don't think I've been bitten by a mosquito all summer. I applied DEET twice for black flies, but that is all.

For my traveling use, I've been using this plug-in mosquito repellent.... But for some reason, I can't seem to find them in any stores here! Okay, so you want to buy it where it's not for sale so that you can take it to where it is for sale. Got it.
