I don't know if I'd consider 26.2 miles a long trail (Old Croton Trail). But, I guess it's relative to the person and place.

I don't know if I'd consider 26.2 miles a long trail There are a few of those on there like that. Everyone is different but I'm not sure I'd consider anything under 75 miles a "long trail". At least for me that is not what comes to mind.

I'm also not sure about the Highline Canal trail. It's paved, located almost entirely within a metropolitan area, and it much more popular with cyclists and runners than hikers.

much more popular with cyclists and runners than hikers. As a backpacker, I'd agree. Though, since wiki defines long-distance trail as being used by various methods of non-motorized travel (foot, cycling, horse, x-country skiing), it fits.

As I get older, they're all getting longer.

There is a lot of hiking trail in the US. I wonder if it is at all possible to walk from coast to coast without having to use a segment of paved road.

That's an interesting idea, I'll have to look into it, but I have a feeling that at some point, you will need to walk on a road because where there is alot of protected areas, they're not all connected.

Seems like the most plausible route would involve the North Country Trail. But I agree that it seems very unlikely one could do this without at least some road walking.
