Thought I might give you an update on my bike tour. Started 7/13/16 in Seaside OR and currently trying to snag a campsite in Yosemite. After cycling down the coast, I spent a few days with my son In the Bay Area and continued across the Central Valley to Yosemite. Things are going quite well and I'm enjoying myself although since leaving the coast it's been rather hot every day - mid to upper 90s. Next day or two it's across the Sierras 😨 and then into the deserts of Nevada and Utah which makes me a little apprehensive I'll post pictures when I figure out how to on this phone.
Best wishes
Jerry

I haven't kept up with the forums for a while and was not aware you were on Tour. That is great. I started doing some longer distance riding in 2014 myself. My uncle got me in to it - he came over from long distance bike riding to backpacking, and I went the other way. 2014 I did 1000 miles and 2015 I did 1500, not too bad for my first 2 years riding trying to balance working full time and mostly doing weekend rides with some evening rides. How are your miles going? Do you have any daily goals? Destination goals each night? Total trip? I'd like to see your set up when you get around to it. The forums require a link from a third party host site - like Photobucket. On a side note, I have been using GaiaGPS to track my trips - both backpacking and biking (among other things). I have an iPhone with it on there and an Android tablet. I think the Android edition is a bit better. It looks a bit clunky, but I put the tablet on my handlebar with a RAM X-Grip mount. I really like the zoom level I can get on the tablet and still bring out the details of the roads I want. I can't see that level with the iPhone - too small of a screen.

Glad it's going well--sorry I missed you when you were in the Bay Area! Be safe crossing Nevada. Them places are hot, and a long way between water sources!

If you use Photobucket, their app is actually pretty easy to use. Here is the page for whichever flavor you need. Tip: Going down Tioga Road? (...Gulp!*) That would put you in the vicinity of Mono Lake, and it would be worth taking a bit of time to check the Visitor Center, and also to check out South Tufa if you happen to be going out Hwy 120 toward Nevada. Mono Lake is an Ice Age remnant and is an interesting stop. * Steep descent, steep drops off the side and no roadside barriers. Woooo[weee!

I was wondering just the other day how the trip was proceeding. So thanks for the update! Just out of curiosity, are you using any kind of Spotty device by which your family can locate you through wireless communication?

Wow! Crossing the Central Valley at this time of year must have been rough. You must have sucked in a few pounds of dust. It wins the prize for highest atmospheric particulate density in North America by a pretty wide margin.

You are making very good time. Are you planning to stop for the night at Topaz Lake?

currently trying to snag a campsite in Yosemite. Since you are solo on a bike, you should be able to find some people at any campground in Yos that will let you crash in their site for a night. They may even feed you dinner! edit: just lock up your bike and any valuables just in case.

You're going/went through Nevada! Where? As you all know my favorite state is Nevada! I just came back last Sunday the 17th of last month! I passed through Mono Lake - great place - didn't go through Tioga Pass though! By all means, check the Visitor Center! The South Tufa is great!
