Welcome to the forums. We have plenty of "who knows what" to spare.

Thanks for the welcomes! I've called NYC home for many years, now. My 5 year old son has gotten me back outside climbing, hiking, fishing and camping, again. I'm looking forward to backpacking and winter camping with him, eventually! I'm really out-of-touch with gear innovations and improvements over the last 15 + years and am hoping to catch up! I've been using my old Dana Astralplane (overkill, I know) but some of my friends tell me that it's a "vintage" or a "relic", "it's too heavy" or "out of date" compared to all this ultralight weight stuff that's out there!
Where do I love to hike or where do I hike now? These days, my usual haunts are Harriman State Park, the NYS section of The AT, Long Path and the lower 'Daks. I get over to Japan every three years, or so, and have enjoyed hiking Tsukuba-san summers & winters. Going back for New Year this year and am planning on taking my Altai Hoks up and gliding down Tsukuba-san! I loved hiking the High Peaks Region of Adirondack State Park, Tupper Lake being a particular fav spot. A summer Presidentials Traverse was an accomplishment! Modoc National Forest and Estes State Park. Moab and Bryce Canyon were a couple of favs, too. Trinity-Shasta-Whiskeytown rec area was another favorite place to hike and camp. Hiking up Mt. Shasta in summer and hiking/camping on Quandary, Torrey & Longs Peaks are my only altitude claims to fame.

I don't really know of any big innovations in backpacking technology in the last 15 years. Perhaps a good thread topic in the gear forum...

Welcome, from Texas. Out of curiosity, are you a Japanese-American?

I'm really out-of-touch with gear innovations and improvements over the last 15 + years and am hoping to catch up! Most of the innovations are to lighter packs and tents, as well as cooking gear. Also, these days very few still wear heavy leather hiking boots.
