From August 3 to 7 I was out on the Duckabush River in ONP doing trail work with WTA, Washington Trails Association. In those five days me and four other guys hiked 50 miles clearing the trail of downed trees. We carried all our own personal gear and food as well as the tools required to logout the trail. The hike in from the trailhead to Ten Mile Camp where we established our base camp was 10.6 miles. Map of ONPThis is a bit of Ten Mile Camp and some of the crew getting dinner made. And this is more of Ten Mile Camp. Here was a good project log, a downed Douglas fir. About 2/3 way through it, it split along a shatter line. We put in a makeshift wood wedge and finished it off. Here you can see the splits or shatters which make sawing difficult. After the second cut, we rolled the billet out and toppled it over, the top of which you can see. Also note the huge cedar in the background, which we did not saw out but instead made a low route under it. Here is another log, a downed silver fir. Properly lining up the saw for the first cut. Proper angle choice will allow the billet to drop out without binding and roll in the direction we choose. After the second cute, the trail is clear and the billet has been rolled off down below. And again, another log cut and the trail cleared. Here are three of my saw mates at the Lacrosse Pass Junction. All in all we cleared about 80 trees off the trail ranging from just three inches to three Plus feet. Some simply involved tossing and some involved tricky sawing. But the main thing was to clear the trail, stay safe, and have some fun. It really is fun on these trips. I enjoy my volunteer work. Anyway, hope this gives you an idea of one aspect of trail work done by volunteers. Rumi

Sweet! That is a very impressive amount of work done by 5 guys.
I'm doing some crosscut saw work this weekend. The scenery won't be quite as good. But it is really fun, and feels good to take care of the trails you love to hike.

Great! Cutting up trees is the kind of trail work I could get into. I'm a lot better with a saw than a shovel or mattock.

Very impressive, and reflective of your dedication. Some of those old trees are just amazing.

Logout is the most fun, but strangely I can really get into brushing, which most people don't like at all. I have a thing about attacking salmon berry which has overgrown the trail. Rumi

Some of those old trees are just amazing. I wish I had taken a photo of the rootball of that cedar I pointed out in one photo. It was nearly 25feet high. Rumi

BTW, there are likely many organizations near you if you get the hankering to volunteer. Back-Country Horsemen are all over the Western USA and there are many hiker orgs as well. BTW, you don't have to even like horses to work with the Back-Country Horsemen doing trail work. *bigequusgrins* Some orgs deal exclusively with a single trail system, park, recreation area, etc, but they are out there to plug yourself into.
