I haven't gotten into reading Topo maps yet. (beginner here) but this looks to be INCREDIBLY helpful. Thanks for the post!
If it's not too difficult of a question, would you be able to point in the right direction of learning how to read topo maps?

It's pretty basic stuff really. The closer the lines the steeper the profile.I learned to read a topo through field work of matching the map profile to the terrain profile. One of my first jobs was prospecting mountainous properties which involved wandering around with a rough topo marking features that the actual engineers used to produce detailed topo maps. So, I can pretty much look at a topo and see the property. And,when I say I like to explore the property then let others map it, I am not entirely joking...

The Nat Geo maps have too many errors. Roads missing, trails shown as roads, place name errors, etc. There are better sources.

whistlepunk can you point me to some sources that you would recommend? I used to get mine from a friend who worked at a landscape architecture firm. In the Army I had other resources. Now I'm looking for some that I could use if I want to go hit some of the smaller trails here in Pennsylvania. Some are on a hiking website for trails here in PA, but some of them are weak. Thanks for your suggestions in advance.
