A friend of mine posted this on Facebook yesterday. Apparently, the bears broke into his car first, then went after his "neighbors" after he scared them off. Many more bear-human interactions this year than normal, probably because of the drought we're experiencing.
Excerpts:
Bears can not only be resourceful but destructive. Franklin and Lexi Smith of Lee Center, New York found out the hard way when a bear broke into their car and tore it apart in the Adirondacks.
Smith says the bear went through the Old Forge Camping Ground, opening several cars before getting to their vehicle. “It started hopping on the hood, triggering the car alarm and angering the bear. When the alarm goes off, the car locks and unlocks and the bear got inside. We were parked on an incline and the door shut behind the bear, locking him inside.”
When the bear couldn’t get out Smith says that’s when “all heck broke loose because the bear was locked inside while it’s babies were outside.”
Smith finally unlocked the door and the bear got out. “The bear kept charging so I sprayed it with a fire extinguisher. It took off but kept coming back for it’s babies,” says Smith. “It left for good once we left and it could get it’s babies.”
The Smith’s are no stranger to bears since they camp in the Adirondack’s often. “We cleaned all the food out of the vehicle and even vacuumed because we have a 2 year-old. We kept all the food in the cabin and locked the car doors,” says Smith.

Wow! Can't blame the bear for going batshit crazy in the car, though. I'd do the same thing for my babies if I thought they were in danger and I couldn't get to them.

Why would an alarm system unlock doors?

I'd do the same thing for my babies if I thought they were in danger and I couldn't get to them. You must have some powerful arms and claws!
