It's been thirty years since I've strapped on a back and boots and walked away from civilization for several days.
I'm now gearing back up to do it again. First the obvious stuff, rebuilding my gear, physical reconditioning, and planning trips.
But It seems much has changed in thirty years. We used to strike out into the back country with a topo map and a compass. We made camp when we were tired of walking, built a shelter, built a fire, and usually took small game with our .22 rifles to supplement our meager rations.
From what I've seen in researching potential trips today, this is no longer possible? Almost every trip I've thought would be fun is in places where the preferred method of enjoying the wilderness is apparently to hike, eat nutrition bars, and sleep on a rock. Bush craft activities are apparently forbidden in most locations. I don't know...maybe I just haven't hit the right web site yet.
Are there any places left where you can actually explore and utilize the back country?

Check out National Forests and BLM land. And make sure you know the current fire restrictions. They do ask that you dis-assemble anything you've built before you leave.

Thanks! I hadn't thought of BLM. Hell, I think they own most of America now.

Generally these days bush craft is frowned upon. Leave no trace is the standard. There are a few websites for it. Things are definitely not the same as they were 30 years ago.

Leave No Trace is just as challenging and artful as bushcraft in my mind. Another challenge people seem to enjoy is DIY gear and ultralight backpacking. Rumi

Too many people have caught on to the "wilderness experience" that it is no longer found in the expected places.
