How far would you guess the campsites are from the Bishop Pass Trail Junction? A mile and a half?

Shoot...I forgot that Grouse Meadows was past the junction. It's well over two miles past!

I liked the look of the camping opportunities high in Evolution Valley off the trail below The Hermit. Colby Meadow had some great spots, and down the valley at Evolution Meadow had some nice quiet spots. Just get off the trail a little to get away from everybody looking for the campsites on their app. Do use trails generally lead to campsites like around here? Or will they just as likely lead to fishing spots-like they do here...

The forest is not thick in Evolution Valley, so you can get around easily. Just find a nice spot with a view and camp. I followed a use trail to a nice campsite, but you don't need a trail and there is lots of open space to camp.
Most of the JMTers will be looking at an app on their phone that lists places to camp right on the trail and won't think about camping anywhere else.

I have to scratch my head about people who ask about campsites. You can camp anywhere, within Leave No Trace strictures. The farther away from those beaten-to-nothing campsites right next to the JMT you get, the fewer bears will play games with you and your canisters and the quieter it will be.
JMT/PCT thru hikers will hike all night, all day, in the rain and lightning, and it's kinda like a freeway. We camp way off and away - no sense in pretending it is wild if you're just waving to someone every five minutes.

I'm just trying to get an idea where I can find sites. I don't want to risk the wrath of my hiking partner when we have to hike 3 more miles because we can't find a nice site. I'm used to the east where you can hike miles and miles and find squat for a nice place to camp. I only get out west every few years, so please forgive me if I ask a bunch of stupid questions-I'm just trying to make my vacation as nice as possible. Thanks again to everyone for the help.

It's the most heavily hiked corridor in the entire mountain range. There are more campsites than there are bears....

I think we are going to try to bag Pilot Knob if we have time. Looks like a great view of the area and a pretty easy climb. Pilot Knob

I'd say one or the other At least when not just an alternate route over a col. Oh and as to finding "a site"? The entire Sierra alpine landscape is one huge, glorious, site.

Oh and as to finding "a site"? The entire Sierra alpine landscape is one huge, glorious, site. Slight exaggeration, but mostly a valid point! I definitely agree about getting away from the PCT/JMT. I think we are going to try to bag Pilot Knob if we have time. Looks like a great view of the area and a pretty easy climb. The spouse did that a few years ago while we were passing through. A very straightforward climb and great views (I haven't done it; the kids were too young then to leave them in camp alone).
