Hi kids,
I am 47 years old. I am super out of shape. I get winded going up one flight of stairs. I am working on getting back on the trail after years away. I have the bushcraft knowledge, so fitness is my biggest barrier to having fun.
SO, let's see if we can start a support thread for other folks that need to get in shape. Post here what you are doing to get trail-ready. Get encouragement! Celebrate your small victories. Tell us how it went on the trail.
Just holla if this thread interests you!

Hi! aim small miss small. This is me when I'm trying to get in shape. When I am trying to get ready for a big hike, I have a calendar that I mark off. I have my goal and set a lot of little goals along the way. this way I can see if I'm making my progress or overshooting my goal. I know as I get older it is harder to recover. I try to train with a treadmill that has the capability of a 40% incline, only when I can not get out side.

I live in Florida, so obviously at sea level. I go outside to climb stairs, 100 flights per day, 3 days a week. I have a bike path that uses overpasses to cross major roadways, and there are stairs leading up the sides of it. 2 flights up, then down to repeat until I reach 100. Early in the morning, since it gets too hot and humid.
I also can walk 8-10 miles along the bike path with my pack on, if that is needed. Not the same as on dirt, but it helps. At 65, I know I can no longer just pick up the pack and go.

To prep for hiking, I tend to hike! Otherwise, at the gym I do basic weights to tone and use the stair stepper machine for cardio and legs. But definitely hit trails as often as you can. Start light, easy, and short, and work your way up from there.

Check out the weekly fitness update thread... ...but don't be intimidated by it. Or anything anyone posts about where they are fitness-wise. Those are goals for where you will eventually be. But that's months away and the road there is one at your own pace. lostwalker has a great system. Set goals, mark them off, and don't be afraid to revise down or add on time onto your calendar plan if need be.

The one thing with my system that works for me is that I can see progress. Even if it is slow, progress is still progress.

I feel your pain, but I am the same age as you. It's no different getting in shape now then when I was 27. You know what, if I am truthful, the age card is just an excuse I like to use when I am lazy or unmotivated. You will have to find a better excuse if you want to justify being out of shape. Find your inspiration and ROCK it.
