amydiercon, That is a very striking cloud! I asked my meteorologist spouse about it, and he said it's some kind of wave cloud, and wondered if you were downwind of a mountain range? Also wondered if it was stable or moving.

The cloud appeared at 11:00 am yesterday, and it was last for about half an hour, and then disappeared. It was very amazing.

I'm moving this thread to the Gallery Archives, just to keep the themed threads together and easy to find. Maybe I should change the name of that grouping from "archives" to "Themed Gallery."

In early June, 2013, I was on my sailboat at the top of Lake Michigan in the Straits of Mackinac approaching the turn south through Grays Reef Passage. In the photo below, you can see the fog bank that I was going to turn into. Ended up running in dense fog with zero visibility for hours. Just to the north were these braided clouds. Rebeccad, could you ask your husband about these clouds? I've never seen anything like them before or since.

I just asked my husband and he’s never seen anything like it, either. Have you shared it anywhere else and gotten any feedback? We wondered if it was something about how the wind was breaking up the edges of the fog, but that really begs the question of why. All he can say is “I don’t think it’s random.”

Have you shared it anywhere else and gotten any feedback? No I haven't. It was just a curiosity I forgot about until this thread jogged my memory.
